Where both teams came from
Spain’s travel
Spain’s tournament got off to a brutal start. In its first two games, La Roja scored eight goals while giving up none. Spain, however, came in second place in its group as a result of a devastating 4-0 defeat to Japan.
After Switzerland’s first-ever knockout triumph, a 5-1 round-of-16 victory over Jorge Vilda’s team, closer matches against the Netherlands and Sweden in the quarterfinal and semifinal followed.
After overtime, Spain defeated the Netherlands 2-1. Spain beat Sweden 2-1 in the semifinals to get to the final for the first time. The winner came in the 89th minute.
England’s route to the final (Women’s World Cup final)
Despite not being at their best, the Lionesses topped their group with three wins from three games. In the final group stage game against China, the Lionesses looked to have found their killer instincts with a 6-1 win.
However, England couldn’t carry that momentum into the knockout stages as Sarina Wiegman’s side scraped past Nigeria on penalties and then edged Colombia with a 2-1 quarterfinal win.
Who will be the deciding factor
In the quarterfinal and semifinal matchups, head coach Vilda had to look to his bench for some much-needed motivation as Spain was failing to find its mojo.
Salma Paralluelo was chosen by Vilda, and it is safe to assume that the gifted girl was the key to La Roja’s success.
The 19-year-old had an impact off the bench in both of Spain’s most recent World Cup games, scoring crucial goals in the quarterfinal against the Netherlands in the 111th minute and the semifinal against Sweden in the 81st minute.
Will the manager continue to use the tried-and-true method of releasing the Barcelona winger off the bench, or will Vilda start Paralluelo?

England’s tactical experimentation
Due to injury, England entered the World Cup without several important players. Through the course of the competition, tactics have also evolved, with head coach Wiegman switching from the well-known 4-3-3 configuration to a 3-5-2 formation, and performances have improved as a result. Lauren Hemp, an electric forward, is one of those who will most benefit from this tactical change. World Cup final
The Manchester City forward struggled early on in the World Cup, but ever since she moved up front with Alessia Russo, Hemp has been England’s best performer.
The 23-year-old’s speed and cunning have been fully on display, and never more so than in the semifinal victory over Australia. Her speed on the break was essential to England’s historic victory; Hemp concluded with a goal and an assist in the 3-1 victory. World Cup final
